A Few Tidbits

This weekend has been an awesome whirlwind.  Adam’s parents came into town and we spent the weekend with them giving them a little taste of Chicago.  It was great.

I’m also coming to you from a “remote” location for the next few weeks.  No, I’m not on some wonderfully tropical island sipping mai tai’s, but I am enjoying a massive kitchen so it’s pretty much the same thing.

This post has been super short on purpose.  I have been awake since 1 am this morning and I don’t think that I will be nearly as productive today as I had hoped.  Oh well, sometimes you just have to give in to multiple naps.  I’m cool with that.

I will fill you in on all the details of my weekend and what’s going on these next few days in my Wednesday post.  For now I will leave you with these funny memes and go sleep for a few hours…..

Not Moving and Spring Cleaning

While it might officially be spring, I am currently watching the snow fall out my window as I write this.  Ah spring in Chicago: Where you’re more likely to have a white Easter than a white Christmas.  Oh well, I will just pretend that it is warm and sunny out there and soon I will be sweltering in the Midwest summer.

I had the realization the other day that for the first time in about five years Adam and I are NOT looking for a new apartment and NOT moving.  This might not seem that significant, but to me it’s huge.  Every single year since I graduated from college I have moved to a new apartment.  I have written quite a few times about our moving endeavors so if you have been with me for awhile you know how much I hate moving.  It’s just the worst to sit there and pack up all your stuff, schlepp it all to a new place, and then unpack all your stuff.  I am really enjoying this time that I am not searching for a new place, then visiting those new places, and then moving to a new place.  It’s just the best.

I will move physically but I ain't moving apartments

There is one good thing that came from us moving so frequently.  Because I didn’t want to pack and move junk that I wasn’t using we always went through all our stuff and got rid of anything that we didn’t need or use.  We would fill big black bags full of clothes to donate and load up are car with stuff that we hadn’t used in years and drive off to Goodwill to give it all away.  It always made me feel lighter and happier to unburden our house with unnecessary things.

Even though we aren’t moving, this weekend I decided to go through all of our things and do some spring cleaning.  It’s amazing how many things you accrue over a year and stash into closets and cabinets and then promptly forget.  Even though we haven’t been in our place for a full year yet, there was still a pile of clothes and things that we no longer needed.  Again it felt great to get rid of the weight of that clutter.

Get it? Clean up your food, but not with actual cleaners. Cheesy, I know

Spring is a great time to not only clear out the clutter of your life but clean up your health as well.  It’s time to get tough and look critically at the food you eat.  Are you eating more sugar than normal?  Are you snacking on junk food rather than fresh food?  Are your portions way too big?  Are you eating mindlessly instead of really enjoying your food?  Take a look at what you do for exercise.  Are you really pushing yourself to the best of your ability?  Has your routine become boring so you’re just phoning it in?  Are moving in some way each day?  Do you enjoy the exercise you’re doing?

Ask yourself these questions and make sure the choices you’re making are serving your goal and helping you lead a healthier life.  It’s a good idea to spring clean your life every once in awhile to increase your happiness and success.

Get to cleaning out that closet as well as that fridge today!  Have a great Monday!

Monday Funday

Ok, so Monday isn’t really all that fun but maybe if we say it enough it will be true.  Probably not, but let’s pretend.

Last weekend my husband, Adam, came down with a cold/cough/sore throat and was out of the game for a few days.  We took him to the doctor, got him some meds, and he is on the mend.  I thought I had escaped whatever bug he had but Friday morning I woke up with a tickle in my throat and by Saturday my nose was running like a faucet.  Yesterday my head was all congested and I just wanted to be able to breathe through my nose.  Luckily I didn’t get hit as hard as Adam, but still, it’s no fun to have a cold.

So I spent this past weekend trying to take it easy.  Keyword here: trying.  I know that I need to rest to get better faster, but I am really bad at just sitting around.  I like to be accomplishing something at all times, it’s something I’m working on.

In my “resting” state, I spent some time in the kitchen on Saturday coming up with a few new recipes for the blog.  I have a few that need some tweaking, but I did manage to come up with a new soup and it really hit the spot for someone with a cold.

When I did finally manage to sit on the couch, Adam and I binged on House of Cards.  If you have not watched this series, run to your TV/computer and watch all of them now.  The Underwoods are deliciously ruthless and evil and I love them.  It’s one of those situations where you know it’s wrong to cheer for them but you can’t help but hope for them to come out on top.  This season so far (we’re about 6 episodes in) has been pretty good and I can’t wait to see where it ends up.  Also, is it wrong for me to want to be as badass as Claire Underwood?  I mean in one episode the woman threatens a country with war on the toilet in the women’s bathroom at the UN.  That’s ballsy right there.

In between the awesomeness of House of Cards, I also watched a few episodes of Chopped.  Obviously I love watching cooking shows and Chopped is one of my favorites.  While I was watching I realized as much as I love to cook and create dishes I would never make it past the appetizer round.  I would get so stressed and would probably just throw up my hands and cry in the corner.  I like to take my time in the kitchen and there is no way I could come up with something edible and creative in 20 minutes.  Oh well, I’m sure someday Food Network would come up with a show where I would have unlimited time, unlimited ingredients, no judges, and I get to make whatever I want, right?

Hopefully this cold goes away soon and I can get back to my normal routine.  But let’s end this post on a high note with a picture of my adorable cats, because who doesn’t love pictures of cats?  Crazy people, that’s who.  Have a happy Monday everyone!

How did you spend your weekend?  What’s your favorite show of the moment?

My Weekend in Rolla

Hopefully you are all digging yourself out of the snow or maybe you’ve decided to just hunker down and hibernate through this storm.  I’ve done a little bit of both.  I didn’t do my normal run this morning because there is still snow EVERYWHERE, but I did make a quick trip to the store.  I plan on spending the rest of the day inside working though.

I actually had a really great weekend.  Thursday I made my way down to Rolla, Missouri to visit my friend Ashley!  I hadn’t seen her since she came to Chicago in September so we had some catching up to do.  And let me just say we lived it up in Rolla!

We went to the vacuum cleaner museum.  Yes this is a real thing.  Fun fact, old time-y vacuums freak me out.  I don’t know why but they look evil and I feel like they are going to attack me.

We saw the world’s largest rocking chair on historic route 66.  Sadly you can’t climb up and sit on it.

We drove through Cuba, MO and looked at a few of the murals and then we spent the rest of the day going to antique stores finding the creepiest children’s toys.  Seriously, who made those things?  Definitely have demons inside them.

We talked, laughed, ate (delicious taco salads and my Turmeric-Scented Mushrooms), watched Friends and a whole season of The Killer Speaks.  Ashley and I are a unique kind of fun and like macabre things like shows about serial killers.  Another fun fact, you have a very high chance of being murdered in Missouri.  Three out of the five serial killers interviewed on the show were from/killed their victims in Missouri.  Good times. Good times.

Sadly, I had to cut my trip a little short and come back early so I could beat the snowstorm.  It was great to hang out and laugh about ridiculous things though.  Sometimes it’s nice to break out of your normal routine and spend time with friends even if they live in a place where you might run into a murderer…

Have a great Monday and try to have some fun after you dig yourself out of the snow!

My Weekend

I don’t know about you, but I had a jam packed weekend!  Last week Adam was able to get me a free entry into the Chicago Hot Chocolate 15k/5k race and the race was this Sunday.  I had wanted to run this race, but found out about it too late and the race fee was just a little too much for us so I was super excited when I found out I would get to run.  This was my first Chicago race and it was a pretty good experience.  On Saturday we went to breakfast at Anne Sathers Bakery and had a delicious meal and then we headed to the McCormick place to check out the race expo and pick up my bib.  We of course stocked up on all the free goodies and Adam had copious amounts of chocolate.  I have never been in a race this size so it was a bit overwhelming to see so many people!  While we were downtown, we also went to a modern photography exhibit, hit up Barnes and Noble, and then headed back to our neighborhood and did a little shopping.

Sunday morning we got up bright and early to head to the race.  It was just a little (ok a lot) chilly and because I was in the second wave of runners we ended up standing around for a little over an hour.  I will admit, I was slightly cranky by the time that I finally got to the starting line but that was mostly because my hands and feet were blocks of ice!  Once I started running though I was able to warm up.  It was really neat to run through downtown Chicago, but I did have to fight through the slower runners/walkers.  Once I got used to weaving in and out of the walkers, it was really cool to run through streets that are usually busy with cars.  I ended up with a time of about 30 minutes and while that is a little slower than my normal pace, I was still pretty happy with my finish.  Next year I hope to run the 15k part which will be my longest race yet.

Up early for the race!

Ok, now for the mushy part of my post today.  Today is Adam and my two year anniversary.  I know it’s cliche, but it feels like it was yesterday that I was getting ready to walk down the aisle.  The memories from that day are so vivid in my mind and I still have to pinch myself to remind me that it actually happened.  I got to marry the man of my dreams and these past two years have been amazing.

Adam supports me in everything I do, plus he wakes up at 5:30 on a Sunday to come and stand out in the cold while I run a race.  He loves me unconditionally and accept all my little weird quirks and shortcomings.  He makes me laugh daily and always puts a smile on my face even when I’m having a bad day.  Whether we are out and about or sitting quietly next to each other on the couch reading, I enjoy each minute with him.  I’ve heard that the first two years of marriage are some of the hardest, and while every single second isn’t absolute perfection, I’m still waiting for all this hard stuff that people talk about.  Maybe Adam and I are lucky, but I think it’s more that we are totally committed to each other and making this marriage strong.  We both promised that we were in this for the long haul and that no matter what we would do what needed to be done.  I mean it as much as I did two years ago, I love my husband and can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with him!  Thanks for saying I do Adam!
