Health Feature: Meet Jim Kruczinski

Hello, everyone!  I hope that you had a great weekend and are ready for the week ahead. I got to spend some time with family this past week, helping get ready for a wedding.  It was fun and I learned that I am a pasta making master!  I’m pretty sure I earned the title Nonna Katie after preparing 70 lbs of pasta.  Whew!  But it was great to help out and see family and the wedding was beautiful despite the monsoon that was going on outside.

Today I have a new feature for the blog.  Each month I am going to be highlighting someone who has totally turned their health around.  I talk a lot about being healthier and making good choices here.  I think talk is good, but action is the only way you will get the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.  I want to show you just what hard work and dedication can get you when you finally make the choice to live healthier.  I hope these features will motivate you as well as applaud all the hard work these people have put in!

Our Health Feature: Jim Kruczinskifirst feature is Jim.  Jim and I went to high school together and were in marching band together.  We also had chemistry together our sophomore year, but I don’t know if he remembers that!  Jim was someone who was always friendly and willing to help.  Many a time he bailed me out of a chemistry disaster when he was my lab partner and was always gracious about my science shortfalls.  Thanks, Jim!

AfterHealth Feature: Jim Kruczinski high school, we went our separate ways and sort of lost touch, but thanks to Facebook I saw all the things he was up to.  Around last year, I was scrolling through my facebook feed and a picture of Jim popped up.  I was shocked because he had lost a ton of weight.  I started seeing posts of him running numerous races and seeing updates with before and after pictures.  It was incredible and I was so impressed with all the hard work he had been doing to turn his life around.  Jim was actually the one who inspired me to start this new feature.  I contacted him with the idea and he graciously agreed to be the first.  I asked him a few questions about how he had turned his health around and his advice to others who were in the same position he was.

What did you weigh before and how much weight have you lost?

When I started my weight loss journey on January 8th, 2014, I weighed 408.5 pounds. In the past year and a half, I have lost approximately 220 pounds.

What made you want to lose weight and be healthier?

I got to a point where I was no longer comfortable in my body. It was getting hard to move around. I had to be careful where I sat especially with stadium or airplane seats.

What also helped me realize I needed help was the constant prodding from my sister. One night she got really angry at me and said “Jim, you don’t care about yourself!” At first I was upset, but eventually I realized that she was right. It was after that confrontation that made me search for the program I got into.

What were the first things you changed when you started out?

I started with being on an all protein shake diet for 10 months while taking nutrition and exercise classes.  Please note that this was under supervision by a doctor.  I work with a special program at Lutheran General Hospital. It is called Advocate Weight Loss. (http://goo.gl/84EYf6)  Also, I got more active by walking more and taking the stairs instead of the elevator.

What did a typical day look like before you started?

I would wake up at 6 am and get ready for work.  Next I would head over to a McDonalds on my way to work and order a breakfast burrito meal with a large sweet tea.  I would start work, which consists of sitting in front of a computer.  I would order lunch at my work’s cafeteria. Then go back to work.  After I was done with my day job I would go to McDonalds/Panera for dinner.  I would finish my night teaching/tutoring GED students. When I got home I would have a snack and go to bed.

What was your goal when you first started?

I wanted to be under 300 pounds and become more active. I wanted to fit easier into places and be able to shop for clothes at regular retail stores.

How did you change your diet? What does a typical day look like now?

Now I basically pack all my meals at the beginning of the day so I don’t have to go out to eat.  I now eat more fruits and vegetables.  I eat lean meat such as grilled chicken and turkey.  I reduced my consumption of bread and sweets. I don’t drink soda or sweet teas.  I primarily drink just water.  I try to drink 96-128 oz of water every day.

How did you chart/ follow your progress?

I use the myfitnesspal on my iPhone and I use the FitBit app to track my steps and runs.

What do you do for exercise?

I work on strength training with a personal trainer 1-2 times a week and participate in my gym’s bootcamps, spin classes, and run club every week.  I try to run at least a mile every day.

What is your biggest challenge?

At the moment, my biggest challenge is portion control with certain foods such as with cereal.

What do you do to keep yourself motivated?

I look at old photos of myself and think of how far I have come. I also focus on what I need to do to fulfill my current goals.

What are your health goals now?

Increase my muscular strength.  Maintain my current weight.  I am also currently trying to train up for a half marathon.

Who has been your biggest supporter throughout your weight loss?

My family have been my biggest supporters. They check in on me from time to time and give me encouraging words.

Any advice for those who are just starting out?

Only think about one day at a time. Thinking about how long it will take to get down to your goal weight can be daunting.  Also appreciate the little changes, such as losing a pant size or being able to walk an extra 20 minutes.  Don’t be afraid to ask for help or support.  For exercising I suggest getting involved with a workout class. It creates camaraderie with other people and also helps you stay committed to working out.

You can obviously see that Jim has put it in a lot of hard work to get to where he is now.  He knew that he didn’t want to stay where he was and started making changes to achieve his goals.  I LOVE his advice about taking it one day at a time.  Health starts with small simple changes that lead to big results.

What If…

YouFailing is not Always failure might have been asked the question, “What if you knew you couldn’t fail?”  What would you do?  What risks would you take? I’ve asked myself this but when I think about it, I think it’s a fairly easy question.

I’d do anything.

If I couldn’t fail, why not do anything?  Invest all my money in one stock? Sure, I’m not going to fail.  Go skydiving? Why not?  I’m guaranteed to make it to the ground.  Talk to a room full of thousands?  You got it.  I think there is a better question we need to ask ourselves.

What if we weren’t afraid to fail?

That’s the tougher question because the chance of failure is still there.  This also makes it a more realistic question.  I am going to fail.  You are going to fail.  Maybe not today or in a horrible way but the truth is that failure is going to happen. We all work so hard to avoid failure, it’s not a fun thing to go through.

I hate failure.  I try to avoid it so much that sometimes I won’t even start something if I know there is a fair chance that I will fail.  The thing I am starting to learn though is that each failure is making me stronger.

I have been trying to grow this blog and share my message with a wider audience.  A lot of the things that I have done to try and make that happen have failed.  At first, I let it get me down.  I felt like a loser and thought that maybe I just wasn’t suppose to be a blogger.  I kept trying but nothing was happening.  While I was wallowing I realized that each failure taught me something.  It made me think in a different way to find something that would work.  I was growing and getting better even though it felt like I was one giant failure.

Working on your health can feel a lot like that.  You try something new and it doesn’t work out.  You don’t lose the weight you wanted or you can’t change your eating habits or exercise still feels like torture.  Failure happens a lot when you work on your health and a lot of the time we let failure win.  We quit and go back to our old habits because we obviously don’t have what it takes.

Let that failure teach you something.  Maybe that strategy didn’t work but there is one that will work.  Keep trying and realize that those failures are making you stronger.  Each time you fail but keep going you are making yourself better and making progress toward your goals even if it doesn’t feel like it.

Motivation Isn’t Constant

On the surface, motivation seems to be a simple concept.  It is a drive that pushes us towards our goals.  It’s good to have motivation.  People want it and look for it in many places.  There are motivational speakers, videos, books, podcasts, sayings, and workshops.  Some blame the lack of motivation for not achieving what they want and some have such an overabundance of it that they want to spread it around to others.

I think motivation is a little more complicated than a simple drive that propels us to what we want.

There are many different kinds of motivation.  There is the motivation to get started, to keep going, and even the motivation to stop when we need to.  I think this is what can frustrate people when they want to become healthier.  They think that all motivation is the same and they look at others who seem to have an endless supply and don’t realize that those people have to work just as hard to be motivated towards their goals.

I can tell you from personal experience that the reasons I am motivated to stay healthy today are vastly different than the reasons I was motivated to start years ago.  It’s also a lot of work (and yes, even after all this time it’s still work) for me to stay motivated to keep pushing towards my goals.  There are days where I don’t want to workout at all.  I think about the run I have planned or the weights I have to lift, and I feel like staying in bed or watching TV instead.  There are times when I just want to eat a whole cake by myself instead of the healthy meal that I have planned.  I used to worry that those feelings and lack of motivation were a bad thing.  I thought that I was giving up or failing and I felt guilty.  I tried to shove those feelings aside and convince myself that I was constantly motivated and constantly being healthy.

Over the years I’ve learned that those feelings are just fine and in fact they’re normal.

I’m a human being and I am going to lack motivation at some points in my life.  Motivation isn’t in an endless supply for anyone.  Even those people who seem to have it day in and day out struggle to keep it going.  There are going to be days when being healthy is the last thing on your mind, where working out is going to be at the bottom of your list, and getting whatever food you may find in your belly will be the top priority.

Don’t feel guilty like I did about that.

Motivation is meant to be renewed every day.  It is meant to be strengthened as you go along.  It’s normal for it to fade every once in awhile and it’s ok for you to have to work to get it back.  That’s what makes you a human.  I used to feel like everyone in my life would judge me if they knew how I felt on those days that I had zero motivation to do anything healthy.  I was suppose to be an example of good health.  I put myself on display through this blog and my actions and I didn’t want to let anyone down.  I’ve learned that pretending to be perfect is a bigger let down to people than showing them I’m just like everyone else.

I have my good and bad days just like you have your good and bad days.  The fact that I pick myself back up and get back at it is what defines me more than my occasional lack of motivation.

If you’re feeling like you’re a failure because you haven’t been as motivated lately, or haven’t had any motivation at all, stop.  You’re a human and you are doing the best you can.  You get start fresh every single day, so start today and strengthen your motivation for you and your health.

Unhealthy Is Hard

About a month ago, I wrote about how it was hard to be healthy.  It takes a lot of willpower, motivation, and just plain old work sometimes to be healthier.  This post is about the being unhealthy and how it can be just as hard to be unhealthy as it is to be healthy.  Stick with me on this one, I promise it will be alright in the end!

The first thought that might cross your mind when you read that unhealthy is hard is, “Yeah, right”.  When you glance at the surface of being unhealthy, it looks pretty easy.  You eat whatever you want without caring about the effect it will have on your body.  You don’t exercise and spend your free time sitting on the couch or computer.  You don’t have to sit there and plan our meals and do prep work so you can eat well the whole week.  In fact, it seems really nice and carefree to be unhealthy.  But like I said, that is just the surface.  When you really look at an unhealthy life, you see the challenges and the struggles.

For me, one of the hardest things about being unhealthy was my confidence and self image.  I had zero confidence and my self image was fairly low.  My goal in life was to blend in and in a large crowd, I was good at that.  Sure, with my friends and family I was outgoing and personable, but put me in a room with a bunch of people I don’t know and I tend to blend right into the woodwork.  I knew that I was overweight and didn’t look good and wasn’t eating healthy.  Because of that, I also thought that everyone else thought the exact same thing about me.  I figured that they took one look at me and knew how unhealthy I was and judged me as a lazy person.  I realize now that probably wasn’t true, but at the time that is how I felt.  Due to my natural inclination to fade into the background of most situations, it was really hard for me to finally break out of my shell and take steps to be healthier.  Working out in front of other people terrified me because of course they were all watching me sweat and struggle.  Making healthier food choices was worrisome because they might take notice that I was eating better and then start talking to me about it and I would have no idea what to say.  These may sound like silly struggles to you, but for some of us this is really difficult.  It seems easier to just stay in our shell and live with being unhealthy than try to take on the monumental task of taking steps to be healthier.

Which leads to another challenge of being unhealthy, the whole aspect of, well, being unhealthy.  It is hard to deal with all the consequences of unhealthy choices.  There are the medical consequences, things like diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and a myriad of other ailments.  There are the physical consequences, such as not fitting into clothes, aching joints, and weak muscles.  There are the mental consequences, being made fun of or put down because of your weight, not feeling or looking like you want to, and being judged by others around you.  Those are a lot of struggles for one person to take on and some people have been doing it for years.  That is a lot of stress.

Why don’t they just change?  If you’re unhealthy, just do something about it.  Sure, it might be hard to live with all of those challenges, but it’s within their power to turn their lives around.  To a degree, yes.  Many of us do have the capacity to “fix” all these problems ourselves and start being healthier.  But it takes a lot to get to that point.  No amount of other people telling you to get healthy can actually make you get healthy until you reach the point where YOU yourself want to get healthy.  The other side is that sometimes when you’re on the outside looking in, you can be made to feel like you don’t belong.  How many times have you seen someone who is clearly struggling at the gym?  You’re running along at your solid pace and the person next to you is sweating to maintain a brisk walk.  You’re flying through your reps while the guy on the next machine can barely do one.  I’m not saying that healthy people shouldn’t work out in public, but they need to remember that they started at the bottom too.  Don’t forget what it was like your first time working out and show a little compassion to others who are just starting.

The same goes for eating.  You didn’t just instantly start eating kale salads with homemade dressing one day, you built yourself up to that point.  Slowly making changes and evolving the way you eat.  Don’t judge the person eating a huge cheeseburger with the tiny side salad.  That might be the first time they decided to get a salad instead of fries and that is a big deal to them.

Life is hard, whether you live it in a healthy or unhealthy way.  There are challenges that each lifestyle has to face and neither one should feel diminished because of those challenges.  It takes courage to stand up and decide to change your habits and start being healthier.  It takes strength and motivation to keep going on a better path when there are temptations all along the way.  I want you to realize that each choice you make, good or bad, is unique in it’s own way.  It will present it’s own set of struggles, but you can meet those struggles head on.  If you are still on the unhealthy side of the tracks, believe in your potential and don’t be afraid to take that first step.  For those of you on the other side of the tracks, you’ve come so far and you can keep going.  It may be tough, but you are tougher.

This Is Hard

One of the messages that I hope to convey on this blog is that health doesn’t have to be hard.  You don’t have to be a world class chef, capable of complicated cooking techniques.  You don’t need to live at the gym or buy into crazy gimmicks or expensive equipment.  There are so many simple things that you can do to be healthier and enhance your life.  But make no mistake, healthy can be hard.

Yes, there are ways to make the decision to be healthier much easier than might think.  I try to do my best to share those tips and advice with you.  What I mean is that there are days that you are going to struggle.  There are times that you are going to wonder why you’re even doing this and if it’s really worth it.  There will be moments that you want to quite and you may very well give into those feelings.  Believe it or not, this happens to everyone.  Even the healthiest person you can think of will have moments of doubt and question their choices.  Maybe their moments of doubt last only a minute, but they are still there.

I have gone through periods of time where I really wonder why I am doing this.  It’s hard, it takes a lot of self motivation and willpower, and to be honest I get tired.  I get tired of constantly choosing to take the healthier route.  Some days it would be SO much easier to just get take out food for dinner.  It would be heaven to just sleep in and skip my morning workout.  Sometimes I long to just spend my whole Saturday on the couch watching TV and downing huge bowls of cereal like I did when I was in high school.  I don’t want to prep my meals for the week, I want to sit on my butt and look at pictures of cats on the internet.  I don’t want to drink another glass of water, I want to have a huge glass of store bought, sugar-laden juice.  This is hard, it drains me, why do I keep on doing this?

I have had every one of these thoughts and many others that are less than stellar.  It might seem like I am totally unmotivated to be healthy anymore.  It might seem like I just want to give up and that I should stop complaining.  You’re right.  The thing is, these gripes and struggles are what makes me human.  They are also what makes me stronger and even more motivated to continue as well as try to help others.  Overcoming obstacles and challenges are part of what makes you unique.  They add to your character and make you stronger.  If you never had to face any adversity and were able to breeze through life, you wouldn’t be the person you are today.  Health is like any other part of your life.  It takes strength, some days more than others, to constantly commit to being better than yesterday.  It’s ok to feel all the feelings that you do about being healthier.

What do you do though when you feel like there are more bad days than good ones on your journey?  For me, I try to think of all the things I can do now that I couldn’t do before.  It helps me to see the progress I have made over the years.  It also helps to think about how I felt about myself before I started to make changes in my life.  I wasn’t very happy, I was very insecure, and I didn’t feel healthy or strong like I do now.  I know I don’t want to feel like that again, so that helps motivate me to stay the course when I’m having a rough day.  Sometimes you’ll even find help when you least expect it.  Maybe a family member will comment on all the hard work you’ve done and how it looks like it’s really paying off.  Maybe a friend will start to make healthier choices because you are.  Maybe, like me, you’ll realize your story and experiences can help others feel the way you do now and you want to do what you can to help them get there.

It’s ok to feel doubt and want to give up.  You aren’t superhero (or maybe you are, don’t worry I won’t reveal your true identity) and even superheroes have their down days.  Use those doubts and fears to make you stronger and shape your personality.  Don’t let them tear you down to the point where you don’t want to try.  Learn from them and adjust your journey from what you learn.  I know that you can do this and it’s time for you to believe that you can too.
