3 Common Myths About Exercise

Diet3 Common Myths About Exercise | Life Healthfully Lived and Exercise.  Those two go together like peanut butter and jelly.  They are the first pieces of advice for anyone trying to lose weight.  Both of these things are important pieces of the puzzle that is getting healthy, but that is the key.  They are just pieces, neither is the whole thing.  While both diet and exercise get a lot of talk, I think sometimes that exercise gets more of the emphasis.  This emphasis creates some myths about exercise and its role in a healthy lifestyle.  Today I want to address some of those myths so you can better incorporate exercise into your life and health!

1.  Exercise is the best way to lose weight

Exercise is great and I’m not going to bash it or anything like that.  But exercise really isn’t the only or best way to lose weight. Don’t get me wrong, exercise does help you lose weight, but it isn’t as big a factor as you might think.  Your body is a very tricky thing when it comes to exercise.  It likes to be efficient in all things and it will always find the easiest way to go about its daily tasks.  After you have been exercising awhile your body will adapt to the change and you will actually burn fewer calories every time you workout.  This doesn’t mean exercise is a hopeless cause, you just have to be smart about it.  Try different workouts, different intensities, different times, and don’t rely totally on exercise to get the body or health that you want.  The food you put in your body is what you really want to focus on but more on that later.

2. Exercise has to be vigorous/hard/long or it doesn’t count

This one took awhile for me to wrap my head around.  When I first really started getting into exercising I thought that I had to be dripping in sweat, lying on the ground exhausted, or sore beyond belief for my body to get the full benefit of exercise.  Soooooo not true.  You don’t have to destroy your body in order to reap all the good stuff that comes with exercise, and in fact, that can lead to injury and burnout.  Vigorous exercise does have its time and place, hard workouts aren’t evil, and sometimes you have the time for a longer workout.  But there are times when it’s better to take it easy, do a shorter workout, or even have a rest day.  You need to listen to your body and give it what it needs not beat it up just because you think that is the only way to get fit.

3. Exercise will cancel out any “bad” food that I eat

This common myth is one of my biggest pet peeves.  I hate when I hear someone say, “Oh it doesn’t matter what I eat, I work out.”  It seriously makes me want to rage throw a table.  But instead of throwing tables, I am going to calmly address this myth right now.  First, don’t put food into a good group or a bad group.  Food is food, not a miracle and not evil.  There are better choices that will benefit your health, but you shouldn’t feel guilty about eating anything.  You’re an adult you can choose what to eat.  Second, the saying you can’t out exercise a bad diet is SO TRUE.  You can’t just eat a piece of cake go run 3 miles to “burn it off” and be healthy.  The first problem with that mindset is that exercise doesn’t burn as many calories as most people think (see first myth).  The second problem is that in order to function, as well as exercise, you need to get certain nutrients.  If you are constantly filling your body with things like cake and cookies and processed food your body is missing out on vital things it needs.  The last problem with this is that getting in the habit of working out just to cancel out what you eat is a really good way to develop exercise bulimia.  Exercise bulimia is a very real and serious disorder that shouldn’t be taken lightly.  Choose the food that will help you reach your health goals and the exercise that makes you feel better.

Exercise is good, it has tons of benefits, and it works in tandem with a healthy diet to make you feel your best.  Just make sure you aren’t falling for some of these common myths and use exercise to your advantage.

My Month of No Running… A Year Later

_20150420_094418

This past Thursday, I came back home after housesitting in Sycamore for two and a half weeks.  Other than seeing my husband and my cats, I was most excited to run along the lake again.  It’s an awesome experience.  To one side you have the lake and the beaches, and (if you run as early as I do) the beautiful sunset.  On the other side you have lake shore drive and all the early morning commuters zooming by.

It’s the perfect balance of zen and chaos.  I love it.

Friday morning rolled around and I popped right out of bed when my alarm went off at 5:30 am.  Yes folks, I wake up that early on weekdays.  It was the perfect day for a run.  Not too hot but not too cold.  There was a slight breeze, not the winter gale force wind I had been experiencing for months and there was a gorgeous sunrise.  It was one of those runs where you don’t even realize you’re running because everything is just perfect.

As I was blissing out over this run, I started to think back to last year.  About this time last year as I was on one of my runs my left knee started to hurt.  Then it started to really hurt.  Then I had to stop running and walk and then sit down in the middle of a country road and wonder how I was going to get back home.  It was the first time that I had a real running injury.  I had gotten my share of blisters and chafing and other running maladies but I had never had a full-blown, can’t run it hurts so bad injury.

I was devastated.

Not because I was hurt or because it was really painful but because I could NOT run.  I tried to trick myself and took a few days off thinking I would be fine after the weekend.  Yeah, no dice.  There was no way I was going to be able to keep my regular running schedule with that knee.

It was a really hard month.  I was mopey and crabby and pouty.  Adam should get a medal for being around me because I was not a pleasant person to be around. Running felt like the only thing that defined me as far as physical activity.  I had fallen in love with running and it had helped changed me inside and out and to suddenly have it ripped away really took it’s toll on me.

It sounds dramatic, but I know other runners will feel me on this one.

But here I am a year later, running along Lake Shore Trail despite my dark moments of despair when I would cry and ask Adam if I would ever run again.  That month of no running taught me a lot of things and they have stuck.

1. I am not just a runner.  I have so many other things going for me

2. I don’t have to run every single day to be physically fit, in fact I shouldn’t run every single day

3. Running isn’t the only form of exercise that I enjoy.  I actually like lifting heavy weights and want to lift even heavier

4. I can handle adversity, but I need to learn how to do it with a little more grace.

5. I need to be thankful every run that I can do because sometimes I can’t

Sometimes things happen in life that knock you down so that you can pick yourself up and be stronger.

I think experiencing a month of no running helped me to get to where I am right now.  And where I am right now is pretty awesome.  I am truly blessed to be living the life I am and I love being able to do things that I believe in and help others.  I have an amazing support system and I learn new things each day.  I have pushed my limits more than I thought I could and I am ready to go even further past my comfort zone.  Running has given me so much but not running gave me more than I thought possible.

I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Not Moving and Spring Cleaning

While it might officially be spring, I am currently watching the snow fall out my window as I write this.  Ah spring in Chicago: Where you’re more likely to have a white Easter than a white Christmas.  Oh well, I will just pretend that it is warm and sunny out there and soon I will be sweltering in the Midwest summer.

We-are-not-moving-cropped

I had the realization the other day that for the first time in about five years Adam and I are NOT looking for a new apartment and NOT moving.  This might not seem that significant, but to me it’s huge.  Every single year since I graduated from college I have moved to a new apartment.  I have written quite a few times about our moving endeavors so if you have been with me for awhile you know how much I hate moving.  It’s just the worst to sit there and pack up all your stuff, schlepp it all to a new place, and then unpack all your stuff.  I am really enjoying this time that I am not searching for a new place, then visiting those new places, and then moving to a new place.  It’s just the best.

I will move physically but I ain't moving apartments

I will move physically but I ain’t moving apartments

There is one good thing that came from us moving so frequently.  Because I didn’t want to pack and move junk that I wasn’t using we always went through all our stuff and got rid of anything that we didn’t need or use.  We would fill big black bags full of clothes to donate and load up are car with stuff that we hadn’t used in years and drive off to Goodwill to give it all away.  It always made me feel lighter and happier to unburden our house with unnecessary things.

early-spring-cleaning

Even though we aren’t moving, this weekend I decided to go through all of our things and do some spring cleaning.  It’s amazing how many things you accrue over a year and stash into closets and cabinets and then promptly forget.  Even though we haven’t been in our place for a full year yet, there was still a pile of clothes and things that we no longer needed.  Again it felt great to get rid of the weight of that clutter.

Get it? Clean up your food, but not with actual cleaners. Cheesy, I know

Get it? Clean up your food, but not with actual cleaners. Cheesy, I know

Spring is a great time to not only clear out the clutter of your life but clean up your health as well.  It’s time to get tough and look critically at the food you eat.  Are you eating more sugar than normal?  Are you snacking on junk food rather than fresh food?  Are your portions way too big?  Are you eating mindlessly instead of really enjoying your food?  Take a look at what you do for exercise.  Are you really pushing yourself to the best of your ability?  Has your routine become boring so you’re just phoning it in?  Are moving in some way each day?  Do you enjoy the exercise you’re doing?

Ask yourself these questions and make sure the choices you’re making are serving your goal and helping you lead a healthier life.  It’s a good idea to spring clean your life every once in awhile to increase your happiness and success.

Get to cleaning out that closet as well as that fridge today!  Have a great Monday!

Advice… With A Grain Of Salt

Like many people, I spend a good amount of time on the internet.  One of my favorite sites is Pinterest.  I like scrolling through all the recipes, memes, workouts, and numerous other things that people pin.  The other day I ran across this written on a pin under the Health and Fitness section: “Honey and cinnamon cleanse every morning, on an empty stomach, half an hour before breakfast, and again at night before sleeping, drink honey and cinnamon powder boiled in one cup water. If taken regularly it reduces the weight of even the most obese person. Also drinking of this mixture regularly does not allow the fat to accumulate in the body, even though the person may eat a high calorie diet.”

Yeah, right.

Just not true

Just not true

Most people who read that would probably disregard this “helpful” hint and move on to other things.  But there are others out there who are looking for any way to lose weight and might cling to this bit of advice as a magic bullet.  Everyday I see one thing or another out there in internet land that is just plain wrong, but sounds just good enough to maybe work.  There are lists of negative calorie foods (these do NOT exist people!), exercises that will burn 500 calories (maybe if a person is a certain weight/height/body type), and numerous cleanses that promise everything from weight loss to higher test scores (did you know that your body does a fairly good job of cleansing itself every day?).

All good foods, but they do NOT have negative calories

All good foods, but they do NOT have negative calories

I’m not going to sit here and debunk every single crazy bit of advice that is out there because that would take way too long and you would get bored.  I just want to caution you to take any health advice you read on the internet with a grain of salt.  Even things that I write aren’t meant to be taken as the hard and fast truth.  I am not an expert, I just relate my experiences with you in hopes to help you find your own way.  I want you to be careful because I know what it’s like to be desperate when it comes to my weight and body.

I like eating way too much to drink these things for my meals

I like eating way too much to drink these things for my meals

I was once the impressionable consumer who saw numerous commercials promising that I could lose weight quickly with just one pill!  It was like a miracle.  All I had to do was take a pill and all my weight problems would be solved.  I would finally be happy and look amazing.  I bought into the lie.  Thankfully my mom found my hidden stash of weight loss pills, essentially just caffeine in pill form, before I seriously hurt myself.

I think I'll do this instead of that other workout...

I think I’ll do this instead of that other workout…

Don’t let your desperation cloud your good judgement.  I knew deep down that one pill a day wasn’t going to make me lose weight, but I wanted to believe it badly enough to try it.  I know better now and I always do my research with any health advice I read or hear.  Ultimately you have to do what is best for you and your body.  If you’re confused or something sounds too good to be true, dig deeper.  Talk with medical and health professionals and make sure that you are helping instead of hurting yourself.

The internet can be a great thing, I mean where else can you spend all day looking at cat photos?  But make sure that it isn’t your one and only source for health information.  Take any advice you get from the internet with a grain of salt.  And a funny meme.
