Have you seen those articles/posts about what you should eat instead of the junk food you normally go for?  Or those articles that highlight restaurants worst menu items and then tell you what to eat instead?  Or have you ever tried to look up an ingredient or some other food thing online to see if it’s healthy or not and 3 hours later you have a pile of research saying yes it is and no it will kill you?

It’s really frustrating, isn’t it?

How most people look when they try to start eating better.

Just the other day, I googled quinoa to look up the different varieties and was immediately met with headlines like: Quinoa: Is It The Next Superfood or Will It Destroy Your Gut? And: Quinoa Is The Seed The Acts Like A Grain And Could Be The Way To A Smaller Waistline. Don’t get me started on the back and forth over whether quinoa is “paleo” because that would take an entire day.

While I’m sort of used to nutrition research and know that for every study published stating the benefits of some food there is another one that says it’s horrible for you, I realized that people just starting out on their healthy journey probably feel overwhelmed and confused when trying to figure out if something is good or bad.  I think that’s why I’ve started to move away from that idea.  Food isn’t inherently evil nor is it undeniably good.  It’s food and it either makes you feel your best or it doesn’t.  It helps you meet your goals or it deters you.

So what if quinoa isn’t paleo?  Does it make you feel good when you eat it?  Can you perform your daily tasks without hindrance?  Are you gorging yourself with only quinoa? No, hopefully you have a diet full of real foods like fruits and vegetables.  If you are subsisting on a diet of only quinoa, I’m going to bet you have other things to worry about….

So here is my advice for you health newbies out there and this is something that I wish I had realized early on in my journey because it would have saved a lot of time and stress: Stop worrying so much.  You can always find a reason something is bad or good.  Start looking to yourself to see whether what you put in your mouth is helping you or hurting you.  Start by cutting out processed food and move to whole foods and go from there.  Try new things and if they work for you then that’s all that matters!

Your diet will never be perfect and that is quite alright.  No one’s is.  Not the Instagram stars, not the celebrities, not the fitness guru’s, and not mine.  You aren’t striving for perfect, you’re striving for better than what you were.Eat This Not That | Life Healthfully Lived

Eat this OR eat that.  As long as it works for you, don’t stress it!

My weekend was a little busier than usual because I’m actually coming to you from Sycamore right now.  I’m house/dog-sitting and get to romp about in my old town and enjoy the slow pace of “country” life.  In case you were wondering, the minute you move to any big city like Chicago every other town becomes “country”.  Yes, it’s snobby and pretentious but what did you expect from city-folk?

I actually love coming out here not just because I get to cuddle and hang out with an awesome golden retriever but I get to take food pictures in natural light!  There are like a gajillion windows here and when you’re used to two interior facing windows that maybe get 2 hours of sunlight a day, you revel in the natural light goodness.  Expect beautiful food pics in the near future.

Speaking of food, my family had some good stuff at Easter brunch.  My sister made this awesome quinoa/broccoli/cranberry/candied walnut salad that I could have eaten until my stomach burst. I need to replicate it like immediately.  I made my sweet potato hash because everyone really liked it at Christmas plus it’s a good dish to feed a crowd.  I also tested out some muffins on everyone and the feedback was pretty good so you should see those soon.  There was also fruit, Irish soda bread, ham, hard-boiled eggs, deviled eggs, pasta salad, and mimosas.  I don’t think anyone went hungry….

Overall, it was a great weekend and I’m glad that I got to spend time with my family.  Now I’m looking forward to some good blog work and more spring-like weather!

Life Without The Stuff

Life Without The Stuff | Life Healthfully LivedI know that I’m a little late hopping on the bandwagon of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, but boy did I jump in feet first.

I told you last week that I had finished reading the book and started going through our apartment and deciding what we really needed.  Well, we finished up the process this past weekend and I must say, it feels good.  Our apartment is cleaner, neater, lighter, and more comfortable.  I would say that over the course of the two weekends we spent doing this we got rid of 50% of our stuff and our home doesn’t feel bare.  That’s how much extra stuff we had hanging around. Life Without The Stuff | Life Healthfully Lived

50% of our belongings we didn’t even need.  That seems crazy to me!  Why was I hanging on to things that just sit in the back of a closet never to be used?  Why was I storing random junk items to move from one apartment to the next?  Why did I think these things made me complete when they were just weighing me down?

You might think I’m getting a little too deep about just “spring cleaning” my apartment, but it was so much more than that.  It was going through every single item in my possession and asking myself, “Does this object bring me joy?”  Not do I use it or will I use it or could I possibly use it but does it bring me joy.  At this point in my life, if it doesn’t bring my joy, why do I need to keep it? Life Without The Stuff | Life Healthfully Lived

And this idea transitions so well into other areas of my life.  Why do something if it doesn’t bring me joy?  I want to spend my time and energy doing things that I love and bring happiness into my life.  As cliche as it is, life is too short to waste it on things we don’t like.  I get that in some cases we have to do things that we don’t like, such as taxes or filling a cavity, but that’s even more reason to spend the rest of your time doing things that you like.

I’ve said this before, but if you really don’t like doing something particularly when it comes to your health, don’t do it.  If you really don’t like eating brussels sprouts don’t eat them.  You can find hundreds of other vegetables that are just as good for you and that you like so much better.  If you really don’t like CrossFit or yoga don’t do those forms of exercise.  Again, you can find so many other ways to move your body that you actually like.  Ask yourself, “Does this object/routine/food/person/idea/whatever bring me joy?”  It really might change your perspective on things and help you live a happier and healthier life. Life Without The Stuff | Life Healthfully Lived

Busy, Wonderful, Happy Weekend

Today is just a happy recap of my awesome weekend along with a few pictures from the frozen tundra of Chicago!

Adam and I decided to celebrate Valentine’s Day on Saturday and by celebrate I mean we went out to eat a delicious breakfast.  Going out to breakfast is kind of our thing.  I know most people like to go to fancy dinners but to me, breakfast is where it’s at.

Adam found this really cool little breakfast joint in Uptown called Tweet.  They had an awesome gluten-free menu as well as a packed full menu and it wasn’t hard to find something delicious to eat.  I had a build your own omelette with mushrooms and peppers, plus fruit, sliced tomatoes, and sauteed tofu.  Adam decided to go for a steak breakfast burrito with Chipotle aioli and was pretty much in heaven.  If you’re looking for a neat little breakfast joint, you should check them out!

After eating, we headed over to the McCormick Place to check out the Auto Show.  Neither Adam or I are nuts about cars (we have a car that we rarely drive because it’s RIDICULOUSLY expensive to pay for parking in the city) but it was freezing outside and this was an inexpensive activity that was inside.  We wandered around for awhile, looked at cars of the future, (hint: they all look the same and robots are going to take over the driving world) and tried to figure out which car models actually knew anything about the car they were standing in front of.  Spoiler alert: Not many.

After we were done with that we headed home to just hang out and relax.  Well, our plan was to relax but I decided to ruin that.  Recently, I just finished reading The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo.  It’s an awesome little book and a lot of the advice and methods she uses made a lot of sense.  I started to look around our apartment and noticed that we had a lot of stuff.  Stuff that we never used, stuff that was just taking up space, and stuff that wasn’t bringing us any joy.  I decided enough was enough and I started tackling the clutter.

Soon I sucked Adam into the cleaning spree and over the course of two days we drastically cut down on the amount of junk we had accumulated over the years.  I would say about 20-30ish reusable bags were filled with things we didn’t need and that was only from 3 rooms.  We still have to go through our closets and our bedroom, but I already feel a lot better and I’ll have pictures when it’s all done!

That was our weekend and even though a large portion of it was cleaning it was wonderful.  I got to spend some quality time with my husband, made our apartment cleaner and more comfortable, and ate tasty food.  That’s my idea of fun!

What’s The Worst That Could Happen?

What's The Worst That Could Happen? | Life Healthfully LivedAhhh.  A new year.  Can you smell it?  The resolutions, the goals, the promises, the hope.  It’s all still pretty fresh just four days into 2016.  I’m all about setting goals and intentions for a new year, but I want them to be something more fulfilling than lose weight, exercise more, be more organized.  I want them to be specific.  I want them to have steps that I can take to reach them.

I want them to be something that will make me and my life better.

So whether you call those resolutions, goals, or intentions, make sure you choose something to direct your attention at.  It can really help motivate you to do new and better things.

Last year I chose a word to define my year.  I picked one word and tried to make my decisions and choices with that word in mind.  I chose passion and I think I did a fairly good job of putting passion into everything I did.  I’m going to do a fairly similar thing this year, but instead of one word I’m going to use one question to frame my goals.What's The Worst That Could Happen? | Life Healthfully Lived

What’s the worst that could happen?

This isn’t a nonchalant “Eh, what the heck, let’s give this a go” type of attitude.  I frequently don’t do things because I’m afraid of what might happen.  Mainly failure.  I hate to fail and that fear has held me back from trying or doing new things.

I want to approach this year with the idea that even if I do fail at something it isn’t the end of the world.  At least I tried something new.  And there is a really good chance that I won’t fail, that I’ll excel at my new endeavor and find new strengths and happiness.

So with that in mind, what do I want to do this year?

  • Dive deeper into yoga (maybe even become certified)
  • Expand my writing (maybe even some non-fiction works)
  • Be stronger (physically and mentally)
  • Nurture face-to-face relationships (the internet is great but so is being with someone in persn)
  • Create new things (recipes, art, love…. anything)

There are plenty of things that I am ready to dive into and some of them scare me a little, but hey, what’s the worst that could happen?
