My Review of: Fall FoMo No More from House Vegan

I think that I may have found someone who loves fall just as much, maybe a little more, than I do.  If you have followed me for any length of time, you know that this is my favorite season.  From my love of pumpkins and all things squash to it being my birthday and wedding anniversary time of year, it just doesn’t get any better than fall.

Hannah TesonMy Review of: Fall FoMo from House Vegan | Life Healthfully Lived pretty much feels that exact same way about fall.  So much so that she decided to write a book about it!  Fall FoMo No More is an ebook for those of you who love everything about fall and want to get the most out of this season.  Not only are there amazing and delicious autumn recipes, there is a whole section of the book that is dedicated to helping you plan out fall activities.  From Halloween to Thanksgiving, Hannah helps you organize your fall so that you can get the most enjoyment from this time of year.  She has a fall shopping list, a cooking and cleaning schedule, fun fall activities, and so much more that make planning your fall activities a breeze.

And then there are the recipes, my favorite part!  I was given the opportunity to help Hannah test out a few of her recipes and I can tell you with the highest confidence that they are absolutely delicious.   The even more surprising part for some of you, they’re all vegan!  She has apple cider donuts, chickpeas and dumplings, onion dip, and of course, all the pumpkin things.  If you aren’t drooling just looking at the list of recipes in her ebook, then you might need to get your taste buds checked!

Friday Recipe Round-Up

Yay Friday!  This week has been a doozy for me.  A ton of projects were suddenly due all at once and I have been working to get all of those done.  On top of that, this weekend is my sister’s bachelorette party so I have been getting things ready for that!  Seriously, how is it possible that my baby sister is getting married?!  We were literally just playing with our Barbies and Polly Pockets.  Like yesterday.  For reals.

Anyway!  Because it’s been a crazy week in the Dawson house I don’t have a new recipe for you today BUT do not start sobbing yet!  I do have a round-up of all the delicious recipes I have found on all the blogs I follow.

I will have new stuff for you next week, but in the meantime enjoy these recipes as well as all the ones I have over on my recipe page!

Key Lime Pistachio Truffles from The Clean DishKey Lime Pistachio Truffles

I am really having a thing with key lime lately.  It is the perfect summer treat and there are so many ways to make it.  These truffles look amazing!

Grain-Free Chocolate Zucchini Bread from Predominantly PaleoGrain-Free Chocolate Zucchini Bread

About this time of year, we’re pretty much drowning in zucchini.  It’s delicious but the same old zucchini bread can get a little tiresome.  I love this chocolate twist!

Avocado Lemon Basil Pesto from Kathy HesterAvocado Lemon Pesto

Along with key lime, I have been having a love affair with pesto this summer.   My fridge has not been without a jar of the stuff for more than 2 hours.  The lemon basil in this is amazing, but if you can’t find any regular basil still makes a tasty pesto!

Chocolate Peanut Butter Magic Shell from The Lemon BowlChocolate PB Magic Shell

Be prepared for me to cover everything in this delectable concoction.  If you’re smart you should do the same.

Have an awesome weekend and make one of these glorious dishes!

A Few Thoughts On Food

FoodFood For Thought is a complex thing.

On the surface, it’s just fuel to keep our bodies functioning.  But we know that it is so much more than that.  It is social, it is cultural, it is pleasurable, it is creative, it is tradition, and unfortunately it is sometimes the enemy.

I don’t know exactly when food became such a problem.  If you think back to our ancestors, they didn’t really give much thought to food in regards to good or bad food.  They knew that they needed to eat and that meant hunting, gathering, and cooking.  There weren’t really off-limit foods.  There weren’t junk food aisles at their local store, candy bars didn’t surround the cash register tempting them as they waited to pay, and while they had parties and gatherings with special dishes, they enjoyed them and then moved on with their life.

U.S. Food Administration

Somewhere along the line, food started to get more troublesome.  We started mass producing food and creating products out of things that you wouldn’t necessarily find in a home kitchen.  We moved away from making our own meals and started relying heavily on other sources like restaurants or meal services to provide.  Diets started emerging each promising to fix all our myriad of health problems.  All of these things combined has led to huge amounts of confusion when it comes to what food we should eat.

Cooking Quote from Michael Pollan

I have been there with the thousands of Americans who have no clue what is healthy and what isn’t.  It’s hard when you have advertising for all of these products claiming to be healthy when in fact they aren’t any better than the junk food we know isn’t good for us.  I’ve done my fair share of diets and cleanses and fasts and made food out to be the enemy of all my weight problems.  Don’t get me wrong, food is a huge part of being healthy even more so than exercise.  But it doesn’t need to be a complicated headache.

Food is essential

When things finally started clicking for me it was when I simplified my food.  I stopped buying food in packages and that had commercials and marketing campaigns.  I started using more fruits and vegetables and making all my meals.  I learned how to cook and make things taste good without store bought sauces or dressings.  I tried to stop stressing out over food and feed my body what it needs.

Julia Child Quote

It’s an ongoing process.  I still have times where I have a rocky relationship with food and I have to remind myself to simplify.  Food doesn’t need to be a huge stress in your life.  It will take some work to change the way you view and eat food, but it can go back to being pleasurable, social, cultural, and traditional instead of the enemy.  Eat simply and if you have to wonder about a certain food then you probably don’t need it.

Michael Pollan Quote

Simple is where it’s at.

The Food I Eat

I’m not a vegan, I eat eggs and honey.

I’m not paleo, I eat grains and legumes.

I’m not a raw foodist, I cook a lot of my food.

I’m Katie and I am so much more than the way I eat.

I think that the health world can get too caught up in labels.  We all want to know what diet you’re following or what workout craze is holding your attention.  We want to tout the benefits of a certain lifestyle over another.  Sometimes we want to spend all our energy bashing other lifestyles that don’t fit our mold.  Either way it can seem that instead of a person all we see is a label.

I understand the necessity of labels.  I use them myself, on my blog, on Instagram and Facebook and Twitter.  It is helpful when sharing recipes to let people know what is or isn’t in the ingredients.  But I don’t want to feel tied to a name that only describes one thing about me.

Creamy dairy free and gluten free spring pasta

Creamy dairy free and gluten free spring pasta

Yes, I eat mostly plant-based.  Yes, I don’t eat dairy.  Yes, I limit the amount of gluten I eat.  I do all these things because that way of eating is what works best for me.  The foods I eat are what fuel me in the best way, satisfies my hunger in the best way, and tastes good to me.  It’s ok to not have a specific name for the way you eat.

Eat real food, as close to their natural state as possible.

Try to avoid processed or man made food products.

Don’t worry about what is on your neighbors plate.

Let them eat for them and you eat for you.

We’ll all be a lot happier and healthier if we keep those things in mind.
