A Culture Of Shame

Shame-Shaming

We are living in a culture of all kinds of shame.  If there is something out there, I bet there is some form of shame attached to it.  I don’t want to start your Monday off on a downer, but I feel like this is something I want to address.

shame

Social media is a great and terrible thing.

I love being able to share my life and thoughts with you through my blog, Instagram, and Facebook.  It’s an amazing way to be able to connect with people I never would have been able to before.  It let’s me help you with your healthy journey by sharing my own health experiences.  I can also share the funny and goofy and adorable things that go on in my life, mostly involving Olaf my cat.  It’s great.

shame3

But there is a dark side to social media.  The thought that is always in the back of my mind before I post something.  Is this good enough?  Is this relevant?  Is this offensive?  Is this going to open me up to criticism?  I see all this shaming going on and it affects what I decide to put up or not.  Because of my past struggles with self-esteem and body image issues, I’m always slightly nervous when I put a piece of me out there.  The minute I hit publish or send that image or thought or post is no longer mine, it’s the world.  It’s terrifying.

I wish we could live in a culture of unwavering support instead of one of shame.  So many amazing and strong people are constantly bashed for the way they look or the things we do.  Someone posts a before and after picture of their weight loss transform and the comments start flowing in of how they’ve lost too much weight or they looked better before or they still have a long way to go to have the perfect body.  Someone tweets the dessert they enjoyed on their birthday and suddenly they’re bombarded with comments from the health nazis.

shame2

I posted this video from Blogilates creator, Cassey.  If you haven’t seen it, please watch it because I believe it really shows what it’s like to put yourself out there and try to help others but be brought crashing down by all the shaming and negativity out there.

I can’t fix this problem with one post.  I can draw awareness to it though, and maybe cause you to think about what you are saying to people.  Is the comment you’re about to post one of support or judgement?  Are you encouraging the people around you who are doing their best and accomplishing amazing things?  Or are you contributing to this culture of shame?

One positive comment can do a lot to help drown out the noise of negative comments.  Today offer support instead of shame and help change the way we share with the world.

The Food I Eat

I’m not a vegan, I eat eggs and honey.

I’m not paleo, I eat grains and legumes.

I’m not a raw foodist, I cook a lot of my food.

I’m Katie and I am so much more than the way I eat.

I think that the health world can get too caught up in labels.  We all want to know what diet you’re following or what workout craze is holding your attention.  We want to tout the benefits of a certain lifestyle over another.  Sometimes we want to spend all our energy bashing other lifestyles that don’t fit our mold.  Either way it can seem that instead of a person all we see is a label.

I understand the necessity of labels.  I use them myself, on my blog, on Instagram and Facebook and Twitter.  It is helpful when sharing recipes to let people know what is or isn’t in the ingredients.  But I don’t want to feel tied to a name that only describes one thing about me.

Yes, I eat mostly plant-based.  Yes, I don’t eat dairy.  Yes, I limit the amount of gluten I eat.  I do all these things because that way of eating is what works best for me.  The foods I eat are what fuel me in the best way, satisfies my hunger in the best way, and tastes good to me.  It’s ok to not have a specific name for the way you eat.

Eat real food, as close to their natural state as possible.

Try to avoid processed or man made food products.

Don’t worry about what is on your neighbors plate.

Let them eat for them and you eat for you.

We’ll all be a lot happier and healthier if we keep those things in mind.

I'm not just the food I eat. I'm wonderfully weird, witty, and wacky too!

All In The Family

One of the biggest things that has helped me as I’ve started this blog and continued with my healthy lifestyle is the support of my family.  My husband, Adam, has been one of the biggest driving forces.  He has pushed me to do more, think bigger, and to truly believe in myself and this blog.  I wouldn’t have tried some of things or expanded this blog without his support.

My parents have also given me a lot of support.  They ask me for tips, try my recipes, share my blog posts, and again believe in me to do more than I think I can.  They have always been this way with whatever endeavors I pursue.

The other person who is without a doubt one of my biggest supporters is my little sister, Jodie.  I can honestly say that from the time she was born she has always been behind whatever I do 100%.  At times, I ignored that support (stupidly) and didn’t realize how much it meant to me and what I do.  As I have gotten older I have learned how valuable she is to what I do.  I know that no matter what I have her there by me urging me to do more and be better and helping me when I fall.  She is amazing and I am blessed to have her as my sister.

That’s why I am thrilled to support her in her dreams and goals.

Today I wanted to share one of her new pursuits and urge you to take advantage of her amazing talents.  Besides being an awesome social worker, Jo has always been interested in photography.  She has always liked to take pictures and stage photoshoots, even as a kid.  She’s done a few amateur photoshoots like engagement pictures and family photos, and she is looking to expand and start doing more photography.

Last week she came out to Sycamore and took some pictures of me prepping and cooking as well as some headshots.  They are awesome and I will be using these on the blog and my other social media sites.  She is just starting out, but she does great work and is eager to learn more.  If you are interested in getting some photos taken, for graduation, engagements, professional headshots, family portraits, or anything else and are looking for a great price and a fun person to work with, contact Jodie.  You can email her at ubuntusoulphoto@gmail.com for more information and to set up a shoot.

Support is one of the most important things when you are starting something new.  Whether that is becoming healthier, starting a new business, or diving into a new goal.  Having people behind you to push you forward, pick you up, and keep you going can make all the difference. If you have amazing support, make sure that you are paying it forward and supporting the people in your life.  You never know when you might be the only one keeping that person going.

Who is your biggest supporter?

Chicago Fit Life

I have never been a member of a gym.  The closest I got was the rec center in college, but I have never actually purchased a gym membership.  I got lucky though in that my dad is a kinesiotherapist and has always worked in a gym like setting.  I have been able to take advantage of that and used his gym to do some of my workouts.  This past Saturday, I was able to participate in a demo day at my dad’s new gym, Chicago Fit Life.  I was able to sample twenty minutes of a crossfit workout, a spinning class, and a yoga class.  Having never taken part of a gym or group workout classes, I was excited to try something new.

The demo day was free to the public and was a great way to get a feel for all that Chicago Fit Life had to offer.  The gym is located in Wheeling, Illinois and is fairly close to the train station.  The facility is very modern, clean, and professional, which I feel is important for a gym.  You don’t want to walk into a place that is dirty or doesn’t look well taken care of.  The staff that was there that day were all very friendly and excited to work with our group.  The people who participated in the demo day were from all different age groups and fitness levels and the trainers made sure to address each person’s fitness needs.

We started with the crossfit workout and were taught a few basic moves such as burpees, box jumps, and kettlebell swings.  Once we learned all the movements we jumped right into the WOD or workout of the day.  Now, I know a decent amount about crossfit and even incorporate some crossfit moves into my weekly routines so I didn’t have much trouble following along and completing the workout.  There were a few other people in the class, who might not have really known all that much about crossfit and struggled a little bit, but there were at least three trainers who were able to go around and help those that needed a little extra help.  We finished the workout with the rowing machine, and I have to say that was my favorite part of that workout.  Now I just need to find the space and money for a rowing machine…..

Next, we moved onto the spinning class.  I have never done a spin class and pretty much the only thing I knew was that I would be on a bike.  This part of the demo day was probably my least favorite, you know that riding a bike isn’t my jam.  After a quick tutorial on how to work the spin bike and the different positions we started in with the workout.  I think the biggest problem for this portion of the workout was that it was hard to hear the instructor over the music, but the music is a crucial part of the workout.  For the most part, I just tried to do exactly what the instructor was doing since I couldn’t quite hear her talking.  I did like the music part of this workout and liked that we didn’t just stay in one position on the bike.  It was a fairly good cardio workout and a few other participants said that they really enjoyed that portion.

Finally we ended with the yoga class.  I was really looking forward to this part because while I do yoga regularly, I have never taken a yoga class.  The yoga studio was really beautiful, nice and open with a lot of natural light.  They do keep the room at 85 degrees, so after two workouts it was a little sweaty.  But if I were to just go and do a yoga class I think it would be fine.  The instructor for yoga was really great.  She made sure that we had time to get into poses and went around and helped those that needed it.  It was nice to have a real person be able to help me with some of my poses and adjust different parts of my body.   It was a nice way to relax and recover after the previous two workouts.  I would really like to come back and take an actual yoga class and get that experience.

Other than these three classes, Chicago Fit Life also offers personal training, nutrition plans, as well as regular workouts on your own.  They have a variety of different weight lifting machines, treadmills, crossfit equipment, and free weights like kettlebells and medicine balls.  They also offer sports performance training, which is my dad’s specialty.  He trains athletes of all sports and ages and creates personalized workouts that focus on making the athlete stronger, faster, and better at their sport.  Along with high school and college athletes, he has worked with professional athletes.  He has done a lot of work with prospective NFL players and has a partnership with an agent, Cliff Brady, to help football players reach their goal of playing in the NFL.  I’m a little biased because he’s my dad, but he is one of the best in the business at this and has over 25 years of experience working with and training athletes.  In fact  all of Chicago Fit Life’s staff are qualified and helpful and really seem interested in making sure that you reach your fitness goals.  The facility is really a beautiful space.  It’s big but not a mega gym where you are working out with a ton of other people and you feel like you can get personal attention from anyone on staff.  If you are in the Wheeling area or have access to the train, I highly suggest going out and trying Chicago Fit Life.  They offer different pricing options, including gym memberships or class packages.  You can check out all their information at their website, chicagofitlife.com or on their facebook page.  Go and check them out, I enjoyed my first experience taking classes at the gym and look forward to going back and trying some more!

Oatmeal Bar

No, this isn’t the name of some hip new club (do people still go to clubs? I’m the worst 26 year old ever).  It’s also not a breakfast bar like a granola bar, but it does have to to with breakfast.  I love breakfast.  It is my favorite meal of the day and I like to have a big breakfast.  So many delicious things get to be made and eaten at breakfast and who doesn’t love delicious food?  I think oatmeal gets a bad rap at breakfast.  Either it is full of sugar and additives or it’s plain, gluey, and tasteless.  Oatmeal doesn’t have to be sad! It also doesn’t have to come from a little paper packet that tastes sweeter than a candy bar.

I have started making a big pot of steel cut oats on Sunday mornings and then setting up a toppings bar.  I put out little bowls of things like raisins, chocolate chips, coconut, or goji berries.  This way my husband and I can customize our oatmeal just the way we like it.  Oatmeal is a great way to start the day.  It is full of fiber to keep you full and going all morning long.  I personally like steel cut oats because they are the least processed of all oats, but thick rolled oats are good too and cook a little faster.  Below is how I cook my oats and then a list of topping ideas for you.  There really are limitless options when it comes to oatmeal!

Cooked Steel Cut Oatmeal

  • 1 cup steel cut oats
  • 4 cups water
  • 2 tsp cinnamon

Put oats, water and cinnamon into a medium saucepan.  Stir everything together and then turn heat on high.  Bring to a boil.  Once it’s boiling, stir everything once then put a lid on and turn the heat down to a simmer.  Cook for about 15 to 20 minutes.  Your oatmeal should have a porridge like texture.  Top with delicious things like:

  • raisins
  • goji berries
  • cranberries
  • apricots
  • sunflower seeds
  • coconut shreds
  • chocolate chips
  • maple syrup
  • flax seeds
  • chia seeds
  • pumpkin seeds
  • almonds
  • pistachios
  • walnuts
  • peanut butter
  • almond butter
  • apples
  • nutmeg
  • cloves

These are just a few ideas for you to get started.  You could even go the savory route with your oatmeal.  Just eliminate the cinnamon when you are cooking your oats.  Then add in things like homemade salsa, garlic, oregano, or even hummus.  The possibilities are endless, so get cooking and enjoy a bowl of delicious and healthy oatmeal!
